Double eyelid surgery is considered a representative cosmetic procedure for creating attractive eyes, but it is not uncommon for individuals to consider reoperation due to dissatisfaction with the results or side effects. Experts state that common reasons include asymmetrical lines, overly thick ‘sausage eyes’, faded or loosened lines, or general dissatisfaction with the double eyelid shape.
Dr. Kim Hong-jin, director of 1mm Plastic Surgery, stated, “Eyelid reoperation should be performed after the scar tissue from the initial surgery has stabilized to minimize side effects.” He added, “It is generally appropriate to consider reoperation at least 6 months after the initial surgery, as forcing a reoperation when damaged skin and tissues have not fully recovered significantly increases the risk of severe scarring or recurrence.”
Dr. Kim explained that the most crucial factor for successful eyelid reoperation is a thorough analysis of the cause of the initial surgery's failure. Various reasons exist for each patient, such as left-right asymmetry, excessively thick lines, or problems caused by scarring.
Dr. Kim pointed out, “During reoperation, it is essential to meticulously consider not only aesthetic improvement but also functional elements such as the characteristics of the eye shape, skin laxity, and scar condition.” He gave an example: “Forcing line adjustments when there is insufficient skin laxity can lead to unnatural results.”
He continued, “A multifaceted approach is needed to not only improve appearance but also enhance patient satisfaction and resolve functional issues.” He advised, “Since eyelid reoperation addresses cases where the initial surgery failed, it requires a higher level of expertise and surgical skill. Therefore, we recommend choosing an experienced plastic surgeon.”
He further added, “Eyelid reoperation is a highly complex cosmetic procedure, and the choice of medical staff significantly impacts the outcome.” He emphasized, “After sufficient consultation with a plastic surgeon who has extensive experience, aesthetic sensibility, and anatomical knowledge, and who can accurately analyze the causes of failure, including the degree of adhesion and scarring from the initial surgery, eyelid reoperation should proceed.”
